TECHNICOLOR, BRINGING THE 4K HOLLYWOOD EXPERIENCE INTO THE HOME


Now that HDTV is established in more and more households, the industry is introducing the next generation TV: Ultra HD (4K). With 3.840 x 2.160 pixels, four times the full HD resolution, the new TV format promises viewers a fully new experience.
 
HEVC, A PILLAR FOR ULTRA HD SET-TOP BOX


As Ultra HD cannot live without a significant leap forward in video compression efficiency, the introduction of new standard H.265/HEVC becomes obvious. The new compression format, standardized in January 2013 by the ISO, offers up to 50% bitrate reduction versus the current H.264/MPEG-4/AVC standard at constant picture quality. For Ultra HD, it means that content can be transmitted at a bit rate comparable with the maximum used today for HD.
Not only HEVC will reduce the transmission bandwidth needs over broadcast and broadband networks to enable video compression for Ultra HD video (4K and even 8K resolution) but also to widespread the availability of HD and Full HD content.
At IFA and IBC, Technicolor is the first to demonstrate its new HEVC 4K Media Server, the DST839 using a chipset capable to support HEVC 4K/60 Ultra HD video.

4K resolution alone may be not be sufficient to fully satisfy demanding consumers. Technicolor and the industry are now at work to define and market the next step beyond resolution by offering:
